The Dead Drift
Trout in moving water don't chase a fly. They expect food to drift at the speed of the current, and anything moving faster or slower than that current looks wrong. The dead drift is the discipline of getting your fly to drift exactly with the current, no slower, no faster, no swing.
Why drag kills
Even half an inch per second of drag (the fly moving relative to the current) is enough to telegraph "fake" to a feeding trout. The most common cause of refusals isn't fly choice; it's drag.
The technique
1. Identify the seam. A current seam is where two different speeds meet. Trout sit on the slow side and reach into the fast side to feed.
2. Cast upstream of the seam. The fly needs to land far enough upstream that it has time to settle and reach the seam at the speed of the surrounding water.
3. Mend. As the line drifts past you, the current bows it into a curve. That bow accelerates or decelerates the fly. Lift the line off the water and reposition it upstream to remove the bow.
4. Lead the fly. Follow the drift with your rod tip. Most anglers leave the tip stationary and let the line drag the fly; instead, track the drift like you're following a leaf.
Mending in detail
- Upstream mend: when the fly is in slower water than the line is in. The line wants to drag the fly downstream faster than the current. Mend upstream to absorb the bow.
- Downstream mend: when the fly is in faster water than the line. Rare; happens when you cast across a hard seam. Mend downstream to give the fly slack.
- Stack mend: throw multiple small mends in sequence as the drift extends. One big mend disturbs the fly; three small mends keep it natural.
Drift length
A good drift in moving water is 6 to 12 feet. Anything longer and you've lost contact with the fly. Anything shorter and you haven't given the trout time to commit.
Tells of a clean drift
- The leader bows downstream of the fly (not upstream).
- A dry fly rides without a wake.
- A nymph indicator drifts at the speed of nearby foam, not slower or faster.
If your indicator is moving faster than the foam right next to it, you have drag.
