What to throw right now

Fly anglers
Bugs are hatching (fly). On rivers, try a Stimulator or Chubby Chernobyl with a rust Hare's Ear dropper and dead-drift across current. On lakes, twitch a perch-colored Game Changer along rocky banks at first light. Learn more: Dead drift and Topwater bass.

ON THIS WATER (Caney Creek & Calfkiller River): Wadeable summer river in White County. Classic riffle-pool sequences with deep pools below most riffles — the deepest holes (head-deep on a 6 ft wader) hold the trophy smallmouth. Boulder breaks and undercut banks on outside bends are the panfish water. Per TWRA's Great Falls reservoir guide, the upper reaches of the Calfkiller + Collins drainage hold the highest musky abundance in the Great Falls system — a real shot at musky exists on this water that most anglers don't know about.

6 wt floating line. Wade upstream and cast a weighted #4 olive Clouser into the head of each deep pool, mend hard upstream, then strip-strip-strip as the fly tumbles past you. Trophy fish hold in the deepest pools at the bases of the largest boulders.

6 wt rod, floating line, 9 ft 3X tippet for streamers / 4X-5X for dries. Standard rig: weighted #4 olive/white Clouser or #6 rust crayfish, cast quartering upstream into the head of a current seam, mend hard upstream, then strip-strip-strip as the fly tumbles past you. Pro move: tight-line nymph a #8 rust crayfish (Pat's Rubber Legs) through pocket water with no indicator, feeling for the tick. Strikes on a swung fly come on the dangle; let the fly hang in the seam for 3-5 seconds before recasting.
Spinning / casting anglers
Bugs are hatching (spin). River: tick a small brown jig with a smoke craw trailer along bottom seams. Lake: a tiny hair jig under a slip-bobber along rocky shore, or a Yellow Magic popper twitched slowly with long pauses. Learn more: Topwater bass.

Medium 6'6" rod + 3/8 oz football jig hopped from the head of each pool back through the tail. Topwater at sunset: floating Rapala #5 in silver twitched dead-slow across the tailout of any pool deep enough to hide a 4-lb fish.

BAIT OPTION: Live crayfish on a #4 light-wire with one or two BB shot, drifted from the head of each pool through the slack. Outproduces lures on overcast post-rain days when the river is slightly stained.

Medium 6'6" rod, 8 lb braid + 6 lb fluoro leader. 3/8 oz football jig + rust craw trailer hopped along bottom seams; the strike comes between hops on slack line. Wade upstream of pocket water + fan-cast each likely lie. For trophy fish at sunset: floating Rapala #5 in silver twitched dead-slow across the tail-out of a pool with long pauses, bigger fish smash on the second twitch after a 5-second pause.

Best window: morning

Bugs are hatching (fly). Light rod, floating line. Put a small dry (yellow Stimulator or black ant) on top with a beadhead Hare's Ear or olive damsel nymph underneath as a dropper — bluegill often eat the dropper. Cast into shade and along pad edges; wait a few seconds before twitching.

3-4 wt short rod, 9 ft 5X tippet, #14 yellow Stimulator. Cast across-current 8-15 ft above the riffle-pool tailout and let the fly dead-drift. Redbreast in this river key on the soft slot below every riffle.

3-4 wt short rod (7'6"-8'6"), 9 ft 5X tippet to a #14 yellow Stimulator or #16 black ant. Cast across-current 8-15 ft above the target water; mend immediately so the fly drifts dead. Tail-outs and riffle-pool transitions hold the best fish; rock bass especially love the soft slot below the riffle. Last light is the high-percentage window; trout-style hatch matching matters less than just having a buggy silhouette in the seam.

Flies: Yellow Stimulator #14, Black Ant #16, Small Beetle #14

Small chartreuse bugger or soft hackle under an indicator. Twitchy strips.
